last sunday, college football kicked off for real with ohio st. vs usc. big intersectional games are somewhat rare in college football due to the pressure to go undefeated, so kudos to both schools for scheduling the game. i was glad to see ohio st. get killed; i don’t usually like the favored team going in but I am a slight USC fan just because that much talent on the field is fun to watch. plus they have a kick ass fight song. additionally, alabama starts their conference game this week. they are favored to beat arkansas due to the clemson win and lackluster results from arkansas this year, but travelling to arkansas is never easy (unless you are the aforementioned usc). the most intriguing matchup of the game is the all american arkansas center vs. “the legend” tee cody (nosetackle for AL). cody has generated a huge amount of interest because of his size (~360 lbs) and relative explosivenes (can dunk a basketball). This interest prompted an alabama newspaper to put together a clip of his highlights. skip to :50 for the funniest one.
as for the presidential race, thusfar my prediction about palin has been wrong. together with the convention bounce, a pretty good liberal leaning polling blog has mccain winning as of today. I still expect this bounce to fade eventually as people start finding out more about her, but never overestimate the american public. I find it hilarious that liberal blogs are stunned that mccain is lying in his ads and campaign speeches. so what? politician’s lie, that’s a fact. the only thing that’s different now is that people are calling it lying vs “mistruths”. obama went on and on about mccain wanting us in iraq for 100 years, when what he said was pretty reasonable. we have left behind forces for decades in many different countries following conflicts. the simple truth is it’s way easier to lie constantly and then get all huffy when you are accused of lying then it is to consistently tell the truth, like we shouldn’t subsidize ethanol, or that we should have been getting off oil for the past 30 years instead of right now, or that raising taxes is sometimes a good thing. americans simply do not pay enough attention to politics to be treated as adults. so politicians are free to market themselves like movie studios sell teenagers on summer movies.
