alright, under the caltrain is always right theory, I am predicting an obama victory today. At the station there were 5 obamaniacs waving placards and no clintonites.

wow, it’s hard to believe the giants beat the patriots. I was so sure the patriots, who I extremely dislike, would win that I didn’t even plan on watching the superbowl. Instead Nhi and I took advantage of the empty streets to hit the grocery store. Interesting tidbit: Trader Joe’s had a normal amount of customers during the game while safeway had a noticeable dip.

Luckily, we got back in time for the 4th quarter and I saw the giants improbable victory come to fruition. But in general, this is one of the things I love about sports. Unlike almost anything else you can watch, there are always surprises. It’s not a greek tragedy where the hero always falls on his sword (unless you’re a bills fan). The underdogs win sometimes and the bad guys do also.

This is why I get annoyed by people who try to treat sports like a scripted event. One good example is Bill Simmons. I find his columns somewhat amusing, but he is quite prone to blanket generalizations. He has in fact pretty much built a career on it. E.g. until last year he said Peyton Manning was a choker and would never win the big one. Then last year manning improbably brought the colts from behind against the pats in the AFC championship and went on to beat the bears in the super bowl. but he is not alone, many sports columnists try to paint elaborate pictures around the game and apply dramatic themes. but in reality, it’s just a game. some guys are good. some are not. some are jerks. the best team doesn’t always win. and it’s great.

i agree – sportswriting focuses too much on the fans and the emotions. i just want the facts and analysis of the game. i couldn’t care less how someone felt about some game from 1973.

course i might change my tune if the Seahwaks ever win the Superbowl.

Do you ever listen to the call in sports talk shows? Jim Rome or JT ‘the brick’. That shit makes Bill Simmons look like Oprah compared to Jerry Springer. Although I don’t think that comparison makes any sense but I think it will sit well with that show audience. The market for this is huge as evidenced by the ‘insider’ subscription program that espn has where fans pay to read that crap.

About the superbowl, I hated both teams with a passion but I watched the entire game. For some reason, I hate all the NY teams with the exception of the Mets. The city gets into the head of all the players (sport does not matter). Almost every team is a pathetic under-performer and they seem to take the fans for granted who amaze me even more. Cannot comprehend how people pay in the excess of hundred bucks for nosebleed seats to the see the pathetic knicks. Who knows?
